Matthew Moret

Born in 1997, the artist lives and works in Los Angeles, California

Matthew Moret is an emerging self-taught visual artist from Los Angeles, California. At eleven years old, Matthew was diagnosed with an exceptionally rare and debilitating nerve disease. All of it stemming from a seemingly innocent soccer injury and its following malpractice: Rendering him intermittently bedridden for most of his middle and high school years. Despite overwhelming pain, or perhaps because of it, Matthew found art as his escape. As his world became increasingly more difficult to navigate, he sought refuge in his own world. Channeling trauma, isolation and fear, he transported himself into realms of his own creation, both in visual and written format. After more than ten years Matthew finally conquered his disease, finding relief. His continuing journey into art has only become more intense and emotional, as his personal trauma gifted him his greatest outlet. It is only because of what he saw, what he went through and what he was able to defeat, that he sees through an artists’ perspective.

With years of study and experimentation in the confines of his home, Matthew was more than prepared for the isolation COVID-19 brought with it. While the world began to shut down, and quarantines were mandated, Matthew was already back in his former rhythm, and channeling his emotions and creativity. While many people felt lost and isolated, this past year has been Matthew’s most prolific period yet. His work focuses on various mediums including: line drawing with ink, sculptural paintings and detailed character/figure paintings in acrylic, cityscapes, atmospheric works utilizing butcher paper to create texture and metallic hues. Matthew’s character work from his earliest painting to present day draw references from the world of the future he created in for his upcoming book series, “Universe Redacted.”  They evoke themes of military deception, ethics of human-machine augmentation, artificial intelligence, spirituality and morality… His works combine narratives of harshness and beauty, isolation and deep symbolism that invites viewers to discover new elements with each viewing.
